The name Americus originates with the navigator, mapmaker, explorer, and businessman Amerigo Vespucci (in Latin, Americus Vespucius; 1454-1512). In published accounts of his voyages and discoveries, the word "America" was used for the first time to describe the New World. Through the centuries, the name Americus has come to signify new ideas, new opportunities, and new achievements.
